Treatment

Unfortunately, there is no cure to Huntington’s disease. The disease is unpreventable, however progress has been made in the last 10-15 years. Doctors treat the symptoms instead of the disease itself. Anti-Depressants are given to a patient who shows the signs of depression. A new drug just released by the FDA in august 2008 shows promising results to patients with a chronic case of the disease. The drug is called Tetrabenazine (xenazine). It is supposed to suppress the involuntary movements presented in Huntington’s patients. These patients may have a “peace of mind” if their involuntary movements decrease. These drugs do not stop the mental deterioration. However, they alleviate discomfort and depression. This can make the patients easier to manage.Although Huntington’s disease is pretty rare, it is important to acknowledge it. These people’s brain cells die causing them to have no control of their movements this is the disease at work.

Diagnosing+Symptoms

Diagnosing HD is as simple as taking a blood test. The genetic marker for HD was found in 1983. With the marker present in a blood sample, the chances of getting the disease are tripled. Patients with the disease present symptoms such as uncontrollable jerking movements of the limbs, trunk, face, loss of mental abilities and voluntary motor control.Patients with HD are known to be irritable. This is because the disease affects their emotions. Many patients suffer from dementia and depression. After a person shows such symptoms, it is easy to determine weather they have the disease after a blood test.Ok this video is pretty sad to watch but this is people with the disease and how it affects them.

Statistics

One in 30,000 people in the United States have the disease. A person has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease from their parent’s defective chromosomes at birth .A 50% chance does not mean that exactly half the children in a family will get the disease. This means each individual has their own 50% chance of acquiring the disease. The disease also may skip a generation. The average life span after the disease begins to progress is usually 16 years after diagnosis

Huntington’s Disease

What is it?
It is a hereditary brain disorder which results in the destruction of brain cells. This disease is caused by a genetic defect which is passed down from generation to generation. The degeneration of brain cells is the cause of the symptoms of Huntington’s and can force someone to lose his/her personality, and ultimately their life. George Huntington was the first person to address the disease, at the Academy of Medicine at Middleport, Ohio in 1872. George Huntington’s Studies were way ahead of his time and noticed many things that made this disease Unique. One of the things he noticed was the diseases hereditary nature, meaning that it is unlikely to get the disease unless a relative has it. He noticed that the patients with the disease had tendency to insanity and suicide. As you can see the Brain on the right is of a normal person, while the brain on the left is a MRI photo of a patient with Huntington’s disease. There is a clear difference in the two. The one on the left looks like there is part of the brain missing.

POP culture!

Andy Warhol, "Campbell's Soup Cans" (1962)

Andy Warhol’s famous “Campbell’s Soup Cans” was a piece of art created in the 1960′s. This picture helps define the Pop culture era when media advertising and art began to change. This picture is so simple just 32 cans of soup and yet somehow it always struck me as interesting. This is not just abstract art, where the artist use their emotions to express their feelings. This piece of art is more than that to me. It almost catches my eye. Not because of whats in the piece or how beautiful it is. But it is possibly the way it is arranged. The pattern is so simple and sends messages that are pretty clear. This Campbell’s soup can is the way the artist expresses the view on ordinary culture thats current to the time he created it. Andy Warhol had positive views on pop culture. He created a whole new section in art. He used the concept of repetition, which had not been used much before him, to make the focus on separate can of soup rather than the whole picture. This picture for sure change my appreciation of art. I like simple things. Art like everything else can be viewed in many different ways. However Andy chose to emphasize the packaging for a reason. These reasons may not be so defined as to why he chose soup out of anything, but this was a way for our society to mature culturally.

Responses

Christopher Marzano-  Good draft, needs to be more specific. The introduction needs a little work there is no specific thesis yet the ideas are good. I liked how you compared the two specific website and wrote the main differences in them. However your essay is very formal maybe you should change your sentence structure around. Also good use of quotes maybe can expand on some ideas.
Sophia Goumakos- Introduction was a little weak due to repetitive use of I. However i liked the fact of how you were specific about your topic and you incorporated your personal ideas about overprotective mothers. I also have the same view of overprotective mothers and i think your argument of why this is a bad thing is valid. The quotations were good also supporting your argument but you may want to reorganize them so that each of them have their own paragraphs it may make the essay flow easier.
Amanda Rodriguez- Really good essay strong introduction. Very clear concise thesis. Organized well however some ideas are explained and then you give your opinion right after which is good but can be saved till the conclusion. I liked how you showed both sides of the topic and explained it.  Also, well written like your opinion on the matter of privacy and you made your point clear.

Dexter

images-2

One of my favorite TV series is on showtime called Dexter. This show is about a vigilante killer (Dexter) and how he kills people that deserves it. Dexter is also a blood analyst for the Miami police department. I believe that Dexter portrays a sense of justice to people that get away with murders. I love the dramatic irony on the show because Dexter has to pretend to live a normal life in front of his family and wife but he lives a double life. The first season of the show goes into Dexter’s past and why he has such a dark side. His mother was killed when he was very young and a police officer named harry took him in. As his step father, Harry showed Dexter how to live a normal life and how to keep his secrets from everyone else.

The Simpsons!

imagesI chose to write about was the longest running american cartoon series The Simpsons. This is a show that i have enjoyed watching for many years, and has been around longer than i have been alive. With over 20 seasons, The Simpson’s is a fictional animated series and shows aspects of American culture, TV and events that are occurring now in society. The family set in the cartoon is a middle class american family which consists of Homer Bart Lisa Marge and Maggie. I always enjoyed watching the show because it shows a normal dysfunctional family and how funny things can be when they are crazy. Homer Simpson is a television idol and he portrays the less than average lazy American stereotype who is always dealing with the irony of life. Being a devoted father and husband he is always involved in the family business. My favorite quote from him is “DOH!”, which he says when something goes wrong. The reason I chose to write about The Simpsons is because it is a well known TV show and is apart of the American visual culture. This show has brought up many other animated series about the middle class American family and has greatly influenced American animated television.
